Yoga for Back Pain
Using yoga for back pain relief is very effective. Yoga can and does greatly reduce back pain if done correctly. It is one of the best drug-free methods for reducing and relieving back pain.
The First Step
Please do be evaluated by a physician to determine the root cause of your pain. With this knowledge in hand find a good yoga instructor. Yes, interview the instructor, ask questions.
A good instructor should provide honest answers and not make false promises. When you have found someone you trust they will work with you to devise a program of yoga postures best suited for your situation,
I have suffered from lower back pain and I found yoga to be the best solution. The postures I found most beneficial are the �child pose� and �spinal twist.�
But I found whenever I did a backward bend my back would hurt the next day, so I brought this up with a yoga instructor a few years ago. The solution she gave was so simple and I was amazed how that small adjustment could make such a difference. She told me that when doing a backward bend you should always tuck your hips under first before bending backward. Also and this is a standard rule of thumb do not push beyond your limits do not bend beyond what is comfortable for you.
I�ve also found that just doing the backward bend correctly, as the instructor taught me, has help almost immediately to relieve my lower back pain when it begins to act up a bit. Like most people I forget about my back when it is not hurting and then realize after the fact that I should not have carried that heavy item up the stairs or slacked off a bit with my yoga stretches. Using yoga for back pain relief has improved my back issue considerably.
Yoga gives you a balanced routine of flexibility and strength. The yoga postures not only stretch and strengthen; they also work to release tense muscles, which is the benefit of yoga for back pain. Most back pain stems from tense muscles and once this tension is released back pain is relieved.
There are many relaxation techniques out there and you will find yoga to be one of the best. There is no better way to release the tensions of the day than with a good yoga routine or just one or two of your favorite postures.
Child pose and Spinal Twist
These are two of my favorites, please keep in mind there are many yoga poses that will keep your back pain-free and in combination give you an overall ideal workout for your body, mind, and spirit.
Child pose: From a kneeling position sit back on your heels, then bend forward at your hips until your forehead touches the floor in front of you. Let your arms rest by your sides and release all tension. Hold this pose for as long as it is comfortable then slowly raise your head and body out of the pose.
1. Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you. Rotate your upper body to the right and place your right hand on the floor behind you.
2. Bend your right knee placing your right foot on the outer side of your left knee and keep your left leg straight.
3. Place your left hand around the outside of your right knee and look over your right shoulder. Hold this pose for 20 to 30 seconds and repeat on the other side.
There are many yoga benefits, relieving back pain is just one. I hope you will make yoga an everyday routine and begin to experience all its benefits, your body will thank you for it.
